iPhone Xs Max Review

On the 12th of september Apple held the Gather Round special event (read our recap) and presented the successor of the iPhone X and the Apple Watch Series 3. Our device – the iPhone Xs Max arrived today and now we want to present it to you!

The Wrapping

The wrapping shows the front of the device with a background. Most people interpreted it as a planet, but in reality it’s a colored bubble.

Like you’re used to from apple products, the wrapping is held rather simple and the iPhone on the front slightly stands out before the rest of the box.

The equipment – Nope there’s no 3.5mm audio to lightning adapter

Apple – as always – only delivers the minimum amount of equipment required. But this year there’s slightly less equipment than in the years before. Apple has removed the 3.5mm audio jack with the introduction of the iPhone 7, but they always enclosed the phone with a lightning adapter. This is not the case for the iPhone Xr/Xs/Xs Max. If someone desperately needs this adapter he has to order it from Amazon.

This really shows that Apple wants it’s users to switch to bluetooth headphones or buy lightning headphones. Even if not everybody is a fan of the Apples AirPods (read our review), Cupertino wants to raise the income on their home-made bluetooth headphones.

Enclosed equipment consists of: One Lightning to USB cable, one power plug, one pair of lightning headphones, two Apple stickers and the sim card tool.

Look and Feel

If you’ve previously used the iPhone X, the difference in size is big and the feel is very unfamiliar. The switch from the iPhone 5s to the iPhone 6 Plus also had a big difference in height same as the switch from the iPhone 7 to the smaller iPhone X but this year the change to the iPhone Xs Max is personally relatively hard just because I got used to the smaller size of my previous phone. The iPhone X already had a screen size of 5.6″, which already was pretty huge on it’s own, but the iPhone Xs Max comes with a screen size of 6.5″!

But as usual you’ll get used to the height of the device rather quick and soon it feels completly normal to you. Despite the previously mentioned size it still fits comfortably into your hand and although the border of the device is made out of stainless steel it barely slips out of your hand.

Performance, Camera and iOS 12

The new A12 Bionic Chip ensures with it’s 7nm architecture not only for a better performing device, but also for a longer lasting battery. The camera also benefits of the processor, on portraits you can change the bokeh and focus after the picture has been taken.

iOS 12 ensures a lot of improvements, but does not come with many new features. Altogether the device runs smoothly and stable – as expected.

In the next couple of days we’ll test out the iPhone Xs Max in more detail and provide you with information afterwards. After all, we all would like to know how the up to 1649€ iPhone changes our everyday life. During the keynote a lot of you asked us for a comparison between the iPhone Xs Max and the Huawei P20 Pro cameras. We already compared the iPhone X to the flagship of Huawei (which you can find here) and are already looking forward to giving it another go with the iPhone Xs Max.
